Whether you have a family or living alone, you need to take home safety serious. Risk is unpredictable and that is why you must do everything within your reach to avoid exposing yourself to avoidable attacks and accidents. There are intruders everywhere and it’s a fact that victims of attacks are not necessarily careless people. No shortcut to personal safety.
There will always be moments when your personal safety will some forms of threat. What can you do if your car suddenly stops in the middle of the road when it’s almost midnight? What if the plumber you hired to fix some faulty pipes in your house is a rapist?
In this article, I want to share some necessary precautions that are needful for home safety. The essence of this is to prevent you from you from avoidable attacks while at home. I understand there are scenarios where incidents that lead to attack are beyond your control but that is surely not an excuse to expose yourself too unnecessarily.
GET SOLID DOORS AND ALWAYS LOCK THEM
Strong entry doors tops the list of requirement for total home safety. It is not enough to buy good doors as you will need to always lock the as well. Note that any form of slackness will amount to near maximum exposure to avoidable intrusion and risks.
If an attacker has free access to your house, you are likely not going to have any opportunity to call for help. Also, you might not be able to make an informed decision if you are caught unawares by a criminal.
DOOR VIEWER IS ESSENTIAL
Do not ignore the importance of a door viewer when it comes to personal safety. With a modern electronic door viewer, you will be able to see who is at your door without them knowing you are already at the door. This will help in your decision making on whether to open the door or pretend not to be home.
Note that not all door viewers have all the above mentioned features hence, the need foo you to search the market for products that meet your needs.
IDENTIFY YOUR VISITOR:
Good facial look shouldn’t be enough reason to think an individual is not violent. Be very sure you identify a visitor properly before allowing them into your house. If you are not convinced of his identity, on no account should you open your door.
KEEP YOUR KEYS IN EASILY ACCESSIBLE PLACES:
I advise you always hold your keys in your hand or any other place where you could easily access them as you are approaching your house. This will prevent you from wasting unnecessary time outside most especially at night. Note that attackers may be lurking around hence, any form of time wasting could be very costly.
Also, your key could serve as weapon should any intruder attack you. Tucking a key into his eyes when he least expect it is a good option and could buy you enough time to escape attack.
DON’T BE PREDICTABLE
Do not make yourself an easy target for criminals by allowing them to be able to predict you. I almost lost a friend to a criminal who shot her in front of her window while dressing. She became a soft target when her attacker knew she would always dress up in front of a particular window.
AVOID GOING IN IF YOU SUSPECT ANY FORM OF TAILING:
Personal safety requires some form of intelligence. Be careful not to go in should you suspect someone has been tailing you. Head somewhere else until you are sure of safety. Also, don’t forget to call the police as soon as possible
CHANGE ALL LOCKS IN THAT NEW APARTMENT:
Do not give room for easy access to any intruder by retaining the old keys and locks in your new apartment. Remember those keys have changed hands – From house owner /agent to previous occupier as well as some artisans who renovated the house.
If you can’t afford to change all the locks, replace at least the ones for the two access doors. Also, check to know if your peephole has been compromised.
CHAIN LOCKS ARE NOT RELIABLE ENOUGH:
You are not but compromising personal safety by thinking that a chain lock behind that door guarantees security. Those chains are simply there to give you some forms of privacy. You to know who is at the door before unbolting it. Note that once you unbolt your door an intruder might be strong enough to force himself in.
AVOID CONFRONTING INTRUDERS:
If you suspect there is an intruder in your house, your best option is to retire to a neighbour’s house and call the police. Do not attempt to confront him as he may be carrying weapon and that can pose serious dangers to your life.
Also, note that a criminal is ready to do anything to avoid arrest and possibly prosecution.
LOCKED DOORS DOESN’T GUARANTEE PERSONAL SAFETY:
Bolted doors do not guarantee home safety hence the need for vigilance at all times. Do not wait until an intruder gets in before calling the police as any form of slackness on your part may be costly.
Also, it is risk to limit your watch to your compound but be sure to extend it to outside gate.
INSTALL SECURITY CAMERA
Personal safety is not cheap hence, be ready to invest in security cameras. Do all you can to install security camera to monitor your surrounding as this will help in exposing attackers lurking in a corner before they could gain entry.
You can buy security cameras from Amazon or other trusted stores and distributors. If you want good security camera from trusted brand, you can check them out without delay. The few ones you will find on that page are what buying and affirming their inefficiencies.
This is complimentary to security camera in that you will be able to alert your neighbours of the security breach in your house. Noise and light are two major things criminals hate around them as they often want to commit their crimes unnoticed and if you are able to play on their psychology, you are possibly going to be on the winning side.
Note that this is not a substitute to calling the police but it’s safer to trigger your alarm and thereafter call the police.
REDUCE THAT NOISE:
You may want to party in your house occasionally but don’t make it a habit to always turn up the volume of your sound systems. When the sound from your sound systems is too loud, it becomes almost impossible to hear any strange sound from an attacker who may be trying to gain illegal entry. Enjoy life but be safety conscious
Also, loud noise could prevent your neighbour from being aware of any shouting match between you and a criminal and that surely puts you in a disadvantaged position.
NEVER IGNORE STRANGE SOUND OR MOVEMENT
I was once a victim of armed robbery but I cannot but blame myself for waiting for about 30 minutes before checking to know what was going on. By the time I got to the point, they were already entering my flat.
Whenever you hear any strange noise or perceive strange movements, check to know what is happening. And, if you suspect any security breach or attempted security breach, do call the police.
EXTERNAL LIGHT IS A MUST
Criminals hates light and that is why you must not give darkness chance in your compound. Some robbers once wanted to take advantage street light problem on my street but as they were about starting operations, the street lights came on. They had no choice but to flee.
Intruders are never comfortable where there is light in that they don’t want their faces captured in camera.
USE YOUR CAR HEADLAMP
In case you are coming in after dark when your outside light is yet on, your car headlamps is a better option for illumination. Keep them on until you have opened your garage but just before you open your car door, don’t hesitate to look around to see if there is anyone lurking in any corner.
POLITELY ASK THE TAXI DRIVER TO WATCH
This is specifically for those who return home by taxi. Tell the taxi man to wait and watch until you enter your house before he drives away. He will be willing to do that for you. You will agree with me that attackers don’t normally strike when they know someone is watching. Take advantage of every opportunity to stay safe.
KEEP GARAGE DOOR CLOSED WHEN GOING OUT
Personal safety comes with a price and you should be ready to pay. Do not keep your garage door open when going out as this could give criminals room to hide or pick up weapons against you.
Do everything within your reach to avoid giving yourself away to criminals who are always looking for loopholes in your security system.
DON’T KEEP LADDER OR OTHER TOOLS WITHIN THE REACH OF INTRUDERS
Avoid keeping your ladder and other tools in places where criminals can use them to gain advantage. Accessing your house with your ladder would amount to you, unknowingly empowering your enemy.
KEEP YOUR SHRUB AS LOW AS POSSIBLE
In your landscaping, ensure all shrubs are not above window level and ensure that your garden is well kept. It is your responsibility to do everything within your reach in ensuring that criminals do not have a place to hide in your compound.
GET A GUN OR OTHER SELF DEFENSE TOOLS
Do you know there are smart intruders who can beat virtually all your security structures? Home safety doesn’t stop at setting up security structures as there are times when self defense is needful. You may need to buy a gun if your state permits it or any other weapon for self defense.
This will give you some sort of confidence but when an intruder shows up. You will be able to put up some resistance in case he succeeds at gaining entry into your house. Just as mentioned earlier, you can check out some self-defense tools with which you can put up some measure of resistance.
GET A GUARD DOG
This is possibly one of the most potent ways to protect yourself at home especially if you are not sharing compound with any other person. It guarantees that no one could sneak into your house whether you away or home. I call them perfect home safety partners.
As for me, I prefer a trained dog to an alarm system reason being that the latter will only alert your neighbours of the presence of an intruder whereas the former will take up the challenge of dealing with any criminal who dares come into its territory.
Permit me to also point out that a guard dog cannot take the place of a security camera. A guard dog cannot give account of any incidence and that makes both complimentary safety precaution necessities.
MODERN MULTI-PURPOSE DOORBELL
There are some doorbells that can serve as not just a conventional doorbell but also, as a security camera. Some of then would even alert you even when you are far away from home. That makes them essential safety products that you need to consider in your quest for total home safety. There is no harm in fortifying your home with more gadgets against invasion.
As mentioned in one of the above precautionary measures that there are times when you unknowingly expose yourself to attack, kindly read up how to respond to attack when the need arises.
In summary, be proactive in your approach to home safety. Do not take your personal safety for granted and always stand up to challenges when they come. Never let intruders catch you unawares.
What other measures do you think would boost personal safety at home? I would like to hear from you.
